TRYTHAT TIMECALCULATOR

-={ DESCRIPTION }=-

TryThat TimeCalculator is a specialty calculator that will make your time calculations easier and more reliable. Use for calculating time sums and differences; add and subtract hours:minutes:seconds. Calculate time cards and/or hours worked; times for filling up recording media (audio tapes, CDs, etc); total a series of times splits for sports events or science projects.

-={ FEATURES }=-

Scrollable tape, which can be copied to clipboard, saved to disk text file, or printed direct to printer. Recallable memory. Familiar Windows interface and look.

-={ PROGRAM INSTALLATION }=-

REQUIREMENTS: Requires Windows 95 or better, and a 386 or better processor. Also required are the VB6 Runtimes (included in the full download); if you are not absolutely positive that you have the current runtimes, you must download the full version. If you do not download the full version, and the program fails to work properly, you probably need to download the full version; please do so before contacting TryThat Software for tech support.

INSTRUCTIONS: To install the full version, simply run its installation program from within Windows, and follow the on-screen instructions. If you downloaded just the basic program and docs, then manually install the program and docs in a folder of your choice, and create shortcuts in the Start Menu and on the Desktop, as needed.

-={ OPERATION AND USE }=-

Times are based on the 24-hour clock, i.e. 1:00 pm is 13:00; 1-minute before midnite would be 23:59. The display is pre-configured for time (hours-minutes-seconds) in the format of hhh:mm:ss. If you know that your calculations are not going to involve seconds, you can just use the minutes (mm) and seconds (ss) columns (see "HINT" below).

For adding and subtracting a series of times, operation is the same as a standard calculator, i.e. 1 + 1 = 2. For example to add 7 hours 45 minutes 10 seconds to 6 hours 30 minutes 0 seconds, input and display would be as follows:

    INPUT DISPLAY LOG ("TAPE")

    74510 007:45:10 [blank]

+ 007:45:10 007:45:10

63000 006:30:00 007:45:10

= 014:15:10 +006:30:00 =014:15:10

Input is also based on the standard tenkey adding machine and calculator: to add 1 plus 1, you could input 1 + 1 + = (notice the plus between the second 1 and the equals); the result would be 2, of course. This accomodates the inputting of the same number more than once without re-typing: 1 + + = and the result would again be 2; 1 + + + + = 4, and so on.

To calculate the time difference between 10:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., input in the standard calculator method, as follows: 144500 - 101500 = , and the log tape would look like:

         014:45:00
     - 010:15:00
     = 004:30:00
[HINT: if you know you are not going to be using seconds, then don't input them, the seconds columns would then be the minutes, and the minutes column would be the hours. In the above example, you would see the following:
         000:14:45
     - 000:10:15
     = 000:04:30
This just saves time, and you don't have to remember to put in all those extra zeroes.)

-={ DATA INPUT }=-

CALCULATOR KEYBOARD
BUTTON EQUIVALENT ACTION

0-9 Keypad 0-9 NOTE: make sure NumLock is on for keypad numbers to work. +, -, * +, -, * Add, subtract, multiply.

= = or Enter Equals: totals the current calculations.

CA C or Esc Clear ALL Calculations Stops any calculation in progress, displays 0 on the entry line, and appends a break line to the tape.

CE E Clear Last Entry Erases any number currently displayed in the active entry, but does not interrupt any calculation in progress. For example, if you are adding a long series of numbers and mistype one, clear entry will allow you to retype that number without losing your place. If an operator button/key is pressed (+, - or *, then the entry will be displayed, but will not be included in the operation. C M Clear memory Clears the entire contents of the memory.

M+ A Memory Addition Adds the current total to the memory.

M- S Memory Subtraction Subtracts the current total from the memory.

MR R Memory Recall Recalls the entire contents of the memory; to use the memory in the current calculation, press an operator button/key. NOTE: placing the mouse cursor over the memory indicator (to the right of the current display window) will popup the current memory total. If the memory is active, there will be a red "M" displayed.

CL L Clear Log Completely clears the log (tape). All info is lost, unless you have previously saved the log, or copied the log contents to the clipboard.

BK Backspace Delete last digit of the number currently displayed on the entry line.

Keyboard shortcuts for memory and tape operations are ALSO listed on the Help -> About screen. Also, placing the mouse cursor over the various keys will popup a tooltip for that key.

MEMORY OPERATION

A word about using the memory: to use the total stored in memory, click on the MR button (or press the R shortcut key), then press + to add the memory total to the current calculation, - to subtract, or * to multiply.

-={ MENUS }=-

The menus at the top of the calculator can be accessed by clicking with the mouse, or pressing Alt plus the underline letter of the menu item, for instance, pressing Alt-F would access the file menu.

FILE MENU: (Printing and saving operations are only available in the
registered version.)

PAGE SETUP...: Accesses the standard Windows printer setup
    dialogue.

PRINT LOG: Immediately starts printing the tape log to the default
    (active) printer.

SAVE LOG AS...: Allows you to save the tape log to a text file.

SAVE LOG: Immediately saves the current tape log to the last used log
file name. The save log info is appended to the existing log file.
A word about the tape log: the entries in the tape log, either a single line, several lines, or the entire log, can be copied to the Windows clipboard using the standard Control-C copy command, and then pasted into another application. [NOTE: this feature is only available in the registered version.]
EDIT MENU:

LEFT JUSTIFY: Aligns the text in the log window to the left. The
left justification includes all the operator symbols (+ CA, etc).

RIGHT JUSTIFY: Aligns the text in the log window to the right.

PRINT COLOURED TEXT: Print negative numbers in red.
